What is Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)?
Radiofrequency ablation uses electrical current in the range of radio waves to produce heat to kill tumors. The physicians at RIA endovascular are experts in the use RFA to treat a variety of tumors with similar success rates as surgery. The benefit of RFA is the ability to effectively treat tumors through a needle rather than a surgical incision. This minimally invasive approach allows for treatment of patients who may be too sick for surgery or who need to stay on their chemotherapy. The treatment also ensures a short recovery and less procedural pain.
Why would you need RFA?
Radiofrequency ablation is considered the treatment of choice for painful bone tumors that are not candidates for or have failed to improve with radiation therapy. RFA is also commonly used in the treatment of lung and liver tumors. In consultation your doctor will discuss the optimal treatment strategy for your individual tumor.

Conditions to let us know about
Let your doctor know if you currently are pregnant or breast feeding, feeling ill, have a fever, or are taking any blood thinners.
Insurance coverage
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is covered by most private insurance providers as well as Medicare. We will seek authorization from your insurance company prior to your procedure.
Preparing for your procedure
If you are on blood thinners your doctor will instruct you if you need to stop these medications prior to the procedure. Because you will be sedated, you will need a responsible adult to give you a ride home.
Recovering from your procedure
You will receive sedation during your procedure. You will stay in the recovery area until you are ready for discharge. You will be given written post procedure discharge instructions that will advise you about return to normal physical activity.
