A vascular ultrasound will help monitor the blood flow to organs and tissues throughout the body. You may need this exam to locate and identify blockages that decrease normal blood flow. The ultrasound may also be used to check the valves in your lower extremity veins. Symptoms such as swelling, pain, non-healing wounds and discoloration are just a few signs of the possible need for a vascular ultrasound.

At RIA Endovascular our sonographers–another word for ultrasound technologists–are specially trained in vascular ultrasound. They are all certified as Registered Vascular Technologists (RVT) with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). Our vascular laboratory also maintains accreditation with the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) in peripheral venous testing. We frequently complete quality assurance reviews to ensure the highest standards in vascular ultrasound.
Vascular Ultrasound Services:
- Aortoiliac Duplex: This exam is generally needed for patients with a history of abdominal aortic aneurysm or an abdominal aorta bruit heard on physical exam.
- Carotid Duplex: Patients with a history of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) are scheduled for this procedure as follow up to diagnose carotid stenosis.
- Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): We are able to diagnose or rule out DVT for patient with leg swelling and pain.
- Dialysis Access Fistula Placement: Used to assess patients needing a dialysis access fistula placed for dialysis treatment or previously failed dialysis access fistula.
- Dialysis Fistula: We are able to assess for fistula maturation, difficulty or inability to cannulate for dialysis, failed dialysis treatment or absent thrill on physical exam.
- Iliocaval Duplex: Often this exam is used for patients with a history of DVT or swelling in one leg. It is a tool to diagnose iliac stenosis or compression.
- Lower Extremity Arterial Duplex: Study for patients suffering with symptoms related to peripheral arterial disease.
- Mesenteric Duplex: Patients who have abdominal pain after eating are sometimes seen to rule out arterial blockage to the liver, spleen, stomach and intestine.
- Pelvic Reflux: Used if the patient is not able to have a CT scan to rule out pelvic congestion syndrome.
- Raynaud’s Disease: This is a rare disorder of the blood vessels, usually in the fingers and toes. The blood vessels narrow when you are cold or feeling stressed. Blood is not able to get to the surface of the skin and the affected areas turn white and blue.
- Renal Doppler: Exam to assess renal failure related to uncontrollable hypertension.
- Segmental Pressure/Pulse Volume Recording/Ankle Brachial Index: This is generally done in conjunction with a lower extremity arterial duplex.
- Upper Extremity Arterial Duplex: Commonly performed on patients with cold hands, decreased upper extremity pulses on physical exam or arterial thoracic outlet syndrome.
- Venous Reflux/Insufficiency: This ultrasound is for patients with the following symptoms:
Leg discomfort, aching legs
Leg swelling that worsens as the day progresses
Tired, heavy feeling in your legs
Itching
Restless legs
Skin discoloration
Skin breakdown or leg ulcerations
History of blood clots
