What is an Adrenal Vein Sampling?

Adrenal vein sampling is a procedure used to measure aldosterone from both adrenal veins, to diagnose an adrenal source of excess aldosterone secretion. Because unilateral adrenal etiologies of primary aldosteronism may be surgically resected, identifying these sources by venous sampling is critical.

Why would you need an Adrenal Vein Sampling?

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a dangerous condition that can lead to serious medical problems such as stroke, heart failure and kidney disease. In most cases, the cause of a patient’s hypertension is never found. However, there are several disease processes that cause hypertension that are treatable. Following treatment, the hypertension resolves. Adrenal Vein Sampling checks for high levels of aldosterone which could be the cause of hypertension.
