RIA Endovascular first in the Mountain West to offer SpineJack treatment for painful compression fractures

700,0000 Americans will suffer a painful vertebral compression fracture due to osteoporosis this year.

A vertebral compression fracture occurs when a weakened vertebral body in the spine collapses.

This can lead to severe pain, as well as predispose the patient to more fractures because of the deformity it causes in the spine. Traditionally, these patients are treated with conservative methods, such as bed rest, bracing, and pain medications.

Those with severe pain that does not resolve with conservative measures are commonly treated with kyphoplasty, a minimally invasive procedure where a needle is inserted into the fractured bone through which a balloon is inserted, and inflated to make a cavity for medical cement injection to provide pain relief. While kyphoplasty has excellent results with resolving acute pain and debility from a compression fracture, it does not address the deformed bone and patients can therefore be prone to new fractures.

SpineJack, a device produced by Stryker medical group, offers an innovative way to treat the pain associated with the fracture and also treat the deformity resulting from the fracture. Two titanium devices are inserted into the deformed vertebral body, similar to the kyphoplasty procedure. The devices are then expanded to lift the collapsed bone and restore its normal height. The restored bone is then locked into position with bone cement, which provides stability and pain relief. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and most patients can expect to see rapid, decreased in pain and improvement in function. RIA Endovascular doctors are currently the only providers offering SpineJack in Colorado.
