Interventional Pain Treatment
More than 50% of all patients with cancer have at least moderate pain, in many cases pain is far more severe.
To treat this cancer related pain, patients are given limited options, with opiates being the mainstay of pain control. These pain medications do not always give the needed relief and the side effects, including constipation, drowsiness and dependency, can impair a patient’s quality of life.
If you do not achieve adequate pain control on medications or those medications cause side effects that are negatively impacting your life, and you can point to a specific site of pain, interventional pain management may be an option for you.
Techniques for interventional pain management vary, and depend on the type of cancer being treated. A few treatment options offered at RIA Endovascular include:
Nerve block, or nerve ablation, which either masks or removes the nerves ability to send pain signals, can be especially effective for painful tumors of the pelvis or GI tract.
IR management may involve using small needles that apply either heat or cold to destroy the tumor and treat pain.
Injection of medical cement into tumors in weight bearing areas, such as the lower back, can give significant relief to those who suffer from pain, and this treatment can be performed simultaneously with nerve ablation.
